What is Tajweed?

Tajweed is the set of rules that govern the pronunciation of the words of the Quran during recitation. Linguistically Tajweed means to enhance or make something outstanding.

The rules of Tajweed pronunciation are derived from the Prophet Muhammad’s (Peace Be Upon Him) recitation of the Quran after it was revealed to him by the Angel Gabriel (Peace Be Upon Him). Tajweed is the art of stopping the tongue from making mistakes in the recitation of the words of Allah.

When you learn to recite the Quran with Tajweed through Quran Tajweed classes online, you learn to pronounce the letters and words of the verses correctly. You can give every letter its right in your recitation of the Quran.

Tajweed pronunciation

Each Arabic letter has an articulation point from which it originates, an exit point (Makhraj), and characteristics or attributes (Sifaat). Knowing the Sifaat and Makhraj of each letter is a vital part of Tajweed. Two letters can have incredibly similar exits, making it easy to mix them up. If the speaker does not know the letters’ attributes, they may change the word’s meaning during recitation. Learning and applying Tajweed rules prevents such mistakes from being made during recitation.

What is the importance of Tajweed?

Tajweed contributes to your proficiency when reciting the Holy Quran. Reciting the Quran brings rewards, and these rewards are greater when your pronunciation is accurate. Learning Tajweed pronunciationensures perfect recitation.

Allah (SWT) sends a clear message through the Quran to his creation. The truthfulness of the Quran is revealed to those that recite it in the way it was originally revealed. Believers must, therefore, make an effort to learn and recite the Quran as it is supposed to be spoken.

When you learn Quran with Tajweed online, you can recite the Holy Book as it was revealed to the Prophet. However, there is much more to Tajweed than mastering the dialects or accents. Basic Tajweed rules include comprehending how letters can change how words are expressed, correct syllable timing, and clarity of speech.

Learning Quran Tajweed also provides better recognition and comprehension of Allah’s words, offering a richer connection and greater faith in sha’Allah. The primary purpose of Tajweed, however, is to preserve the legacy of the Quran against misrepresentation.

Why you will love this course

Tajweed pronunciation keys

You will become familiar with the pronunciation keys when you learn Tajweed online. These are the additional signs found on the top or bottom of the alphabet in Arabic. Muslims instigated the concept of pronunciation keys to help non-Arabs pronounce the words properly following simple pronunciation rules. A similar concept is used in modern dictionaries.

The signs were not included when the Holy Quran was initially compiled into a book. Even the dots we see on the alphabets “baa”, “taa”, “thaa”, and other alphabets were not present as Arabs could pronounce the words without difficulty; however, as greater numbers of non-Arabs embraced Islam, the correct pronunciation of the words needed to be retained. The additional dots and signs were added to support non-Arabs in achieving proper pronunciation.

Benefits of learning Tajweed rules

The benefits of learning Tajweed recitation are reflected in the following Ahadeeth:

The reciters of the Qur’an will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels’ Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, relates that the Prophet (SAW) said: “Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

You will be from the best of people’ Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (SAW) said: “The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others” [Al-Bukhari] There are ten rewards for each letter you recite from the Quran “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” [Tirmidhi states this is saheeh]

The Qur’an will lead you to Paradise! The Qur’an is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire.” [An authentic hadith found in AtTabaraanee, on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood]

Tajweed is the set of rules governing how the Quran’s words should be pronounced during recitation.

Recitation of the Quran is a vital part of Islam. Tajweed recitation is the proper recitation of the Quran following the rules for pronunciation of the letters and correct pausing, stopping, and pacing.

The different types of recitation are called the ten Qirats:

  • Nafiʽ al-Madani recitation.
  • Ibn Kathir al-Makki recitation.
  • Abu Amr of Basra recitation.
  • Ibn Amir ad-Dimashqi recitation.
  • Aasim ibn Abi al-Najud recitation.
  • Hamzah az-Zaiyyat recitation.
  • Al-Kisa’i recitation.
  • Abu Jaafar al-Madani [ar] recitation.
  • Yaqoub al-Hadrami [ar] recitation.
  • Khalaf ibn Hisham [ar] recitation.

Proper recitation takes time to learn. If you practise regularly and take on board your tutor’s feedback, you can begin to grasp it in three to five months. You can master Tajweed in about a year if you apply yourself fully.

For those whose first language is not Arabic, Tajweed can be challenging to learn. However, it is a fulfilling and rewarding learning journey for those who dedicate time and effort to it.

Yes. Proper recitation is vital to gain understanding of the Quran. Failing to learn Tajweed means you may make mistakes that change the meanings of the words as your read and recite them. This loses the meaning of the Quran and the message it contains.

The Seven Qirat of the Noble Quran are Nafe, Ibn Katheer, Abu Amr, Ibn Amer, Asim, Hamza, and Al-Kasai.

You must undertake a Tajweed course with an experienced and qualified teacher to recite Tajweed. You need to listen and repeat recitations, receive feedback, and act on that feedback to improve and correct your recitation.

At Jammiaalquran, we offer a range of Tajweed courses to support your learning. When you learn Quran with Tajweed online with us, you are taught by skilled teachers with experience in recitation by Tajweed rules.

Fully mastering the Quran with Tajweed can take at least a year. However, everyone learns at their own pace and much depends on how much time you put into practising and refining your Tajweed recitation.

First, you must learn the basics of Arabic grammar and vocabulary. Learn to read the Quran and find the right teacher to support your recitation and memorisation of the Holy Book. Understand the rules and how they apply to the text, then listen to the recitation and repeat it to your teacher.

To gain proper understanding and ensure that you do not lose or change the meaning of words during your reading and recitation, you must learn the Tajweed rules. As well as ensuring that you gain a better understanding of the Holy Book, it also ensures that the meaning is preserved and not corrupted as it is passed down through the generations.

When you learn Tajweed online, you will learn the different stopping signs and their meanings for when you are reading the Quran. Different types of stop signing include required stop, sufficient stop, good stop, and repulsive stop.

No. It is not recommended as you cannot hear and correct your mistakes. Listening to and repeating audio files is a great way to practise recitation, but if you continually practise the same error, you alter the word’s meaning, and the longer you do this, the harder it is to rectify.

Tajweed covers every aspect of recitation, from pronouncing letters to stops, pauses, and accents. There are over 70 rules altogether.
